Job Overview:


This position will serve as the Deputy Medical Director of the statewide Healthcare Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program. The position will work closely with TDH leadership and report directly to the HAI/AR Medical Director. The Deputy Medical Director will work collaboratively to implement all HAI/AR program activities. Primary responsibilities involve oversight of the regional infection prevention team and projects related to strengthening infection prevention capacity in long-term care facilities across the state. This position will oversee infection preventionists, act as a liaison to healthcare facilities, utilize data to guide program and policy development, provide clinical programmatic oversight for the implementation of prevention, and outbreak response activities.

This position requires strong management and leadership skills. Duties include active participation in CDC-led activities including multi-state projects, grant writing and budget management, representing the department in statewide and national professional forums and interaction with the public, media, and the medical community.

This HAI/AR program is in the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness. The Division includes a wide range of programs, including Immunizations, HIV/STD/Viral Hepatitis, TB, Environmental Health, Emergency preparedness, and general communicable diseases.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate public health programs to reduce HAI infections across a variety of healthcare settings.
  • Serve as liaison with local health departments, state and national government agencies, academic and community-based providers regarding HAI-related issues.
  • Oversee data analyses, surveillance, and investigation of healthcare-associated infections.
  • Oversee the preparation of state and federal funding applications.
  • Oversee the development and management of contracts and budgets.
  • Manage a team of central office staff, regional infection preventionists, and administrative staff.


Education and Experience:

  • M.D. with a TN medical license or ability to obtain a TN medical license by start date.
  • Experience in the field of infectious disease.
  • Experience in infection control, healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, and/ or stewardship.
  • Work experience in public health.
  • Experience preparing grant applications and managing budgets.
  • Strong oral and written communication, program management, and leadership skills.
